Real quick:
Backstory is a GM-less Tabletop Roleplaying game about creating a character that can be used for any other creative project.
Real slow:
This is a game about discovering a character.
I use the word ‘discovering’ carefully; when I set out to make this game it was about ‘making’ a character, but I was corrected. You find your character hidden between the lines in this game, they’re already there, waiting to be pulled out.
I had One Major goal: To keep your character in your hands, but to make your surroundings unpredictable. There are certain prompts in this game that may challenge what you think about your character, but I urge you to lean into these ideas and figure out who your character is through them. If you ‘Yes, and’ the prompts, you will find you have a character with a real past and real steaks.
All that being said, I do hope you enjoy my first game!
